Mikey Welsh, Former Weezer Bassist, Dead At 40

One-time bassist for Weezer, Mikey Welsh was found dead in a Chicago hotel room on Saturday. Forty year old Welsh played in the group between 1998 and 2001, leaving more than a decade ago after suffering a nervous breakdown.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Welsh was found unresponsive on the floor of his room at the Raffaello Hotel on Saturday after failing to check out on time. A cleaning crew tried to open the door to his room and was unable to get in, at which point they found his body lying unresponsive near the door.

He was pronounced dead a short time later, and while the cause of death was not announced pending further toxicology results, authorities suspect a drug overdose. Police said prescription drugs were found in the room, along with a plastic baggie containing white powder believed to be heroin.
Welsh was the band's second bassist, replacing original member Matt Sharp, playing on the band's "Green" album, which featured the hits "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun." After leaving the group, he focused on a second career as a visual artist, and recently wrote on his Twitter page that he was looking forward to seeing Weezer in Chicago at the Riotfest on Sunday night.

PROTEST BY STUDENTS AND PARENTS AT LCWU

Students and their parents protested against the Lahore College for Women University Lahore (LCWU). According to them they were misled by the administration regarding the eligibility criteria for the entrance test. Protesters said that university administration declared at the time of prospectus that students  with 50% marks could appear in the entrance test but now on the test day they were told that only students with 75% marks were eligible to sit in the entrance test for the admission of BS Honors English Literature.

According to the university administration, they had mentioned both, in newspaper and in prospectus as well,  that  that the students with 50% marks are eligible only if they had studied English Literature at intermediate level and  students with 75% marks or more are eligible for the entrance test even with out the said condition.

Hugh Jackman KOs George Clooney At Box Office

"Real Steel" was the clear victor at the box office this weekend. The action-packed robot-boxing movie took in $27.3 million, according to studio estimates, which easily bested the rest of the flicks in theaters, both new and old.

Of course, the contest wasn't exactly along the lines of George Foreman vs. Muhammad Ali. Industry watchers long suspected the mass audience appeal of "Real Steel" to beat the suspenseful nature of George Clooney's "The Ides of March."

"Real Steel" features Hugh Jackman opposite Dakota Goyo, a generally relatable 11-year-old. It features effects-heavy action, a family story and big thrills aimed at a broad audience. It was also executive-produced by Steven Spielberg. DreamWorks will undoubtedly continue to campaign hard for "Real Steel," considering its estimated $110 million budget.

WHAT DID THE PRESIDENT SAY?

President & Prime Ministers - Celebrities and heroes are all on Twitter. Anybody who is anything is on TWITTER and TWEETING. Following and being followed. I speak, ofcourse of TWITTER, THE Social Networking site that has taken the INTERNET by storm. Only recently it announced a 1200 % increase in UK subscribers. That makes the service, where users dispatch 140 character updates to the implied question "What are you doing?" to anyone who signed up for them, one of the fastest growing on the net. A sort of REDUX version of the FACEBOOK, TWITTER was launched by 3 SILICON VALLEY IT BOYS IN AVG 2006 and has now over 11 million subscribers world wide. It has raised over 20 million pounds in VENTURE CAPITAL but has so far brought in very little revenue. Many psychologists feel that Twitter may just solve conflicts and bring us together, all TWITTERING AS ONE.
Twitter is a dynamic community in which you tweet and tweet. Seek and answer ! So next time you need advice on fight a still VOID, just tweet, tweet , tweet away ! Your world will twirl to life.

Students check in at UN Headquarters in NY

By Denise Kohlhepp

-Correspondent, The Signal

As an international organization, the United Nations “aims to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace.”

Some of the College’s International Studies students as well as international exchange students — including myself, from Germany — recently had the opportunity to be visitors at a United Nations conference in New York City.

The United Nations Academic Impact Team invited members and students from colleges, universities and other institutions to join a symposium on Sept. 14 to observe the annual International Day of Peace, held on Sept. 21, and Leah Antil, the international assistant of the Center for Global Engagement, informed us about the event and asked who was interested in going.

I made my way to the city with two other German exchange students, where we were overwhelmed by the excitement NYC has to offer. We arrived at 6:15 pm at the visitor’s entrance to the U.N. headquarters, located at First Avenue and 46th Street. At the entrance we encountered something of historical significance: the U.N. flag that flew above the U.N. Headquarters in Baghdad, known as the Canal Hotel. This location functioned as the center for U.N. activities in Iraq, but on August 19, 2003, the Canal was destroyed by a bomb which killed 22 people, among them the special representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission. Others were severely injured in this attack and the exhibited flag was ripped in several places.

After viewing the memorial, we were brought to a conference room where the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the U.N. International Day of Peace was held. The U.N. General Assembly declared on Nov. 30, 1981 in resolution 36/67 that the day “shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.” The theme of the symposium in 2011 was “Give Peace Another Chance,” and its key element was a round table on “Higher Education and Human Dignity.” This served to realize the goals of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), launched in November 2010 to use the power of education in order to fulfill the mandates and purposes of the U.N.

The program started at 7 p.m. with musical performances by Nashville singer Beth Nielsen Chapman and New York group KaleiDhaPhony.

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, mentioned in opening remarks that one aim of the UNAI is the promotion of “a new culture of intellectual social responsibility” with the help of the world’s higher education institutions.

The event was linked by video to Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Hall in Seoul, Korea, in real-time on the U.N. Webcast page. The round table consisted of seven speakers, with the chief of the UNAI, Ramu Damodaran, as the moderator. Two ambassadors, a special adviser, a graduate student, a professor and Chapman herself participated as panelists.

The group addressed various subtopics on “Higher Education and Human Dignity.” In the beginning, however, a question was raised about whether the notion of peace has changed. Furthermore, the relevance of higher education in terms of preventing genocide was discussed. The singer and songwriter Chapman emphasized the importance of arts in higher education and said she saw creativity as a basis for accessing this kind of mindset. “In underdeveloped countries, higher education doesn’t give you status but courage … With education comes responsibility … it shapes our mindset” and therefore, has the potential to establish freedom, another panelist said.

Other issues presented to us included the transformation of higher education in terms of globalization and the importance of respecting diversity in multiethnic and multilingual environments. The panel described these as important factors in achieving peace in society.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Men Pose Resistance To Girl Students' Dressing

Beit Shemesh, ISRAEL: As the students of Orot Girl's Elementary leave for home accompanied by their parents , groups of ultra-orthodox Jewish men wait for them, shouting insults and pelting them with stones and tomatoes. This is a scene witnessed by many on a regular basis outside the gates of the all-girls school, since the start of the new term this year. The protesting men, all attired in the usual garb of black long-coats and broad-rimmed hats, seem to think that the girls are defiling the sanctity of their neighbourhood; an obvious reference to the way they dress!
The impact this has had on the girls, aged between 6 and 12, is tremendous. There is a general feeling of insecurity and students are afraid of going to school, with many ending up being abused.

Sleeping Through College

The article, taken from Daily SUNDIAL, expresses the concern of student's sleep cycles. It quotes how students have the habit of leaving every work pending till the 11th hour and explains how this can affect their daily routine activities and their physical health as well.

Pulling an ‘all-nighter’ should be the last thing college students pull off. Many college students are not getting the proper eight hours of sleep at night. With students’ fluctuating schedules it could be hard to stay on track. Between exams, projects, work and a social life, how does one ever do it?

It is times like these when independence could bite you in the butt. For some, college is the first time students have control over their schedule, including what time they go to sleep.

According to Maria Berrio, a licensed vocational nurse at West Hills Sleep Disorders Center, about 10 percent of their patients are students who come in for issues related to sleep deprivation. Berrio says they had a patient who was a student that would always fall asleep in his chair and sometimes could not be woken up. This was interfering with his daily activities including going to school and the center is still performing tests in order to treat the patient properly.

“Car accidents, not functioning well, memory loss and diabetes” are just some of the long-term and short-term side affects people experience when not having adequate sleep says Maria Berrio. In order to live well and be alert we must discipline ourselves into everyday regimens including going to bed at a reasonable hour. No more staying up late to watch television or waiting for the last minute to cram for a test or write a ten-page paper.

Dr. Ashwin Kashyap, internist and hematologist, says “Some students these days push themselves to the limit and not giving yourself the proper rest can damage students mentally and physically” because he says “in order to function properly and to the best of our ability, sleep is a must.”   CSUN student Marissa Clement says, “As students we have the tendency to leave things to the last minute and sleeping ends up being something we do only in the weekends.”  Freshman Jonathan Bauer says, “I live with other students and sometimes going to sleep early is hard when everyone has different schedules.”

College students have busy lives but they must take into perspective their health and what is really important. We all only have one life to live and living it to the fullest includes some
