Flying Magic Carpets To Become Reality?

It's about time we start believing in the fantasies of our childhood. Princeton graduate Noah Jafferies proves why!

The "magic" in this plastic flying carpet is pure technology, nothing wizardly or genie-liscious about it. Shove off Aladdin, move over Solomon, technology is catching up with fantasy, the BBC reports.

The prototype flying carpet is described in the journal Applied Physics Letters: "We use integrated piezoelectric actuators and sensors to demonstrate the propulsive force produced by controllable transverse traveling waves in a thin plastic sheet suspended in air above a flat surface, thus confirming the physical basis for a 'flying' carpet near a horizontal surface. Experiments are conducted to determine the dependence of the force on the height above the ground and the amplitude of the traveling wave, which qualitatively confirm previous theoretical predictions."

In plain English, "We've created a flying carpet! Don't stand on it yet please, you'll break it. Give it a few years -- or decades."

So don't get too excited about the prospect of zipping around on your own private magic flying carpet or Back To The Future II style hover board quite yet. The prototype is flimsy, connected to large batteries and moves just centimeters per second.

The device's creator, Princeton graduate student Noah Jafferis tells the BBC he is "working on a solar-powered upgrade that could freely fly over large distances." Because there are no moving components in the flying carpet, Jafferis believes this technology has an edge over competing technologies like hovercraft, prop planes and jets.

Though existing materials do not yet allow feasible use by human riders, Mars exploration rovers using this technology could be a possibility. -The Huffington Post

MIT Develops Artificial Leaf!

By Saad Riaz Qazi
Technology Correspondent, SAM Daily Times
National University of Sciences & Technology

In March, we heard of news from MIT about an artificial leaf. This leaf using only sunlight produces pure oxygen and hydrogen gas. In the yesterday’s Science edition this new technology had been elaborated in detail also a video has been released showing this device in work.

It seems more like a material than device. Neither has it had movable parts nor a specific shape and size. It is made up of semiconducting silicon. On its one side there is a unique cobalt catalyst which was discovered in 2008 by project’s Daniel Nocera. On the other side there is nickel-molybdenum-zinc alloy. Current has been created in the silicon by sunlight. After this catalyst splits the water molecules into H2 and O2 which are in gaseous forms and rise up from the other side of leaf in bubbles.
Look the video shown below from it you can get the idea about what we are talking about:
Produced gases can be separated from each other and stored in the fuel cell. Through fuel cell we can get power sometime later and pure water will be produced also.
Many researchers including Nocera has formed a company named Sun Catalytix, its goals are to research and make these artificial leaves available in the market. $9.5 million was raised last year.
Due to its leaf like shape it is easy to show it to others. Theu could be microscopic or very big. Many researches are still to be done and Sun Catalytix is working on it. It generates power so it could be used to provide energy to houses and communities and also for the reserve to use in case emergencies.

Third Language Acquisition

Mehdi Zoauoui
University of Khemis-Miliana, Algeria

"So now they've made our tongue a gallimaufry or hodgepodge of other speeches" Edmund Spenser

English as a native , as a quasi-official  and as a second language has a different impacts on how we acquire a creature that evolves from stage to stage, from downs to ups, and from synthetic to a more analytic feature; this latter issue is exacerbated by the fact that in some countries there are other languages and vernaculars vacillating between official and non-official state as English does and strives for. This given state can be depicted in Algeria where French shares a linguistic official state with Arabic, whereas the Algerian vernacular is said to be a mixture of the aforesaid languages.
The bugbear of such situation is conspicuous when dealing with young or adult learners trying to acquire English: Do they compare English with Arabic or French? Do they use Arabic/English Interlanguage or French/English Interlanguage? Should we rethink  Second Language Acquisition to Third Language Acquisition?

In this article we'll try to express some concerns about learning a third language within a competing second language that shares a quasi-linguistic dominance over the Vernacular of the learners. So we'll death that issue from a contrastive analytical aspect.
Most scholars define Second Language as the Language being learned or acquired or spoken other than the mother tongue , however it seems embarrassing to some extent when defining second language being so, does an Algerian acquire a third language as he did when acquiring French(almost since the primary school). Here is an example of a high school student typical error :I like not the cats.
If we try to compare that sentence with French and Arabic, we'll have that equivalents:
) أنا لا أحب القطط) Arabic:/ ana la ?ohibo el qitat/ (just an approximation):
French: Je n'aime pas  les chats.
In this example, what is the expected language that the student might have taken as a resource of building his sentence?
It seems that he has taken French as a support for his sentence since French has two particles in representing negation, unlike Arabic which needs only an ante-negation particle and if he has taken Arabic as a resource it would be : I not like cats.
