What started as a peaceful protest against inadequacies in the education system prevailing in Chile, developed into an ugly clash between the police and the students, leading to arrests as tens of thousands of students resumed protests after negotiations with the government failed.

Students, discontented with the present system, calling it both under-funded as well as class-restricted have been demanding an end to for-profit institutions and lower interest rates on student loans.

In a series of developments, President Sebastian Piñera sacked his education minister and made promises for a greater budget allocation for education in response to the rising outrage against his right wing government.
