LOS ANGELES : California moves to create A.I. '' kill switch. '' Cyberattacks and fears over advanced AI grow.

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday ordered officials to explore the creation of a '' kill switch '' for advanced artificial intelligence [AI] systems, while fresh research showing sophisticated cyberattacks and growing safety concerns added pressure on the rapidly expanding industry.

The move came as security researchers said they had used Anthropic's latest software to breach  OpenAI's internal systems, highlighting how rapidly advanced AI technology can be deployed in sophisticated cyberattacks.

'' I just issued an executive order to accelerate the implementation of safety checks and advance the creation of a '' kill switch '' within frontier AI programs,'' Newsom, a democrat, wrote on X, while accusing President Donald Trump of doing nothing on the issue.

Researchers from security firm Hacktron said they exploited a security flaw in OpenAI's public help forum that enabled them to take control of the site, underscoring concerns about the potential misuse and security implications of increasingly capable AI systems.
