See Northern Lights, ‘Shooting Stars’ and a Full Moon This Weekend.
The Northern Lights could be visible across parts of northern U.S. states overnight on Saturday, Jan. 3 through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, according to a forecast for a G1 or G2-level geomagnetic storm by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
The geomagnetic storm could develop in the wake of a coronal mass ejection — a cloud of charged particles — leaving the sun after a solar flare on New Year’s Day.
For some, if could add sparkle to a new year of stargazing. The timing coincides not only with the rise of January’s full wolf moon — the first full moon of the year, which will make faint aurora harder to see — but also the annual peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower.
