MEET THE SWEDES : In April 1985, World Tennis Magazine, then the bible of tennis enthusiasts, released a cover with the headline : '' Meet the Swedes '' in big, bold letters.
Featured in the photos, all clad in black turtlenecks and with half-smiles, were Mats Wilander, Joakim Nystrom, Anders Jarryd and Henrik Sundstrom.
The photo was a nod to the 1964. '' Meet the Beatles '' album cover. At the time, World Tennis editors argued that the Swedes, all ranked among the world's top tennis players in 1985, were to tennis what the Beatles were to pop culture.
The year before, all four players qualified for the men's year-end championships, the Volvo Masters at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
By 1985, six Swedes - Wilander, Nystrom, Jarryd, Stefan Edberg, Jan Gunnarsson and Peter Lundgren - won titles on the ATP Tour.
At this year's NItto ATP finals, which began in November at the Inalpi Arena, Turin, Italy, there were no Swedes among the eight single singles players and eight doubles team.
No Swede has qualified for the tournament in singles since Robin Soderling in 2010.
So what has happened to tennis in Sweden?
The World Students Society thanks Cindy Shmerler.
