ANNIE LENNOX : RETROSPECTIVE '' to a souvenir of frozen moments '' with '' bite-size memories and reflections.''
.- WHERE in your home do you expect to keep or show off this book?
Pride of place on the coffee table - where it belongs !!! But truly, I rarely '' show off '' the glittering prizes at home. Most of these things are kept in storage!
.- Eurythmics scored the soundtrack for a film version of ''1984. '' Do you remember the first time you read the book?
I imagine it was sometime in the 1970s, when '' 1984 '' always seemed so far into the future. The thing that strikes me now is just Orwell's dystopian vision has actually come to fruition.
We think we have freedom and independence, but I'm afraid we don't realize how we depend on a system that doesn't really care about the welfare and well-being of the average man or woman.
.- Have you ever gotten in trouble for reading a book?
As a teenager I sequestered a couple of esoteric books under my bed, as instinct told me my parents probably wouldn't approve of the subject choice.
Of course my mother discovered them and was very perturbed and very perplexed that I'd be reading this kind of '' nonsense.''
I worried my parents quite a lot back then. [ There used to be this thing called the '' generation back '' that some of your more elderly readers might recall? !!!]
.- You're organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite?
Charles Dickens, James Baldwin and V [ formerly Eve Ensler ]. They share deep exploration into the existential human condition, via completely different cultures, perspectives and time frames.
I think they'd have gotten along splendidly........... especially with vodka or cognac poured into the mix.
The World Students Society thanks The New York Times.
