A FILM about a child's beauty pageant that somehow ends up being about depression, failure and family love.
Everyone in this 2006 comedy is falling apart : suicidal uncles, silent teenagers, bankrupt dads.
Just when they pile into that yellow van, you get the rarest thing : a portrait of a family that's not trying to fix each other, just stay together long enough to laugh through this madness.
By the time Olive does her absolutely unhinged dance routine on that stage, you realize the film was never about winning.
It was about being ridiculous together, and surviving the embarrassment.
