One killed in school shooting at Purdue University

One victim was killed after shots were fired inside the school's electrical engineering building on campus shortly after noon on Tuesday. Officials said one suspect is in custody after what they believe was a targeting attack on one individual.

A suspected shooter at Purdue University is seen being taken into police custody after opening fire inside the West Lafayette school's electrical engineering building around noon, according to police.

A suspect is in custody after a person was shot dead at Purdue University on Tuesday, according to officials.

One man, who was not immediately identified, was killed after shots were fired inside the West Lafayette school's electrical engineering building shortly after noon, authorities said.

University Police Chief John Cox described the shooting as a targeted attack on one individual, saying the suspect "seemed to have had intentions for the decedent."

WTHR reported that the victim was a teaching assistant and the suspect is a student. That description was similarly shared by the school's newspaper, The Exponent.

Immediately after opening fire the shooter exited the building where he was taken into custody by police without a fight, said Cox.

The suspect was described by Cox as since providing "little to no cooperation” to authorities.

Students remained on lockdown for nearly two hours after the shots were fired, officials said.

In a surprise twist, just after the lockdown was lifted, officials announced that classes have resumed.

"Right now, since the incident is confined to the electrical engineering building, classes are back in session," said Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Timothy D. Sands, PhD in an afternoon press conference.

"We feel like we have control of the situation," he added. "We feel the campus is safe, is in a normal state of safety, and we're encouraging normal operations."

Sands praised the school’s use of electronic alerts like text messaging to immediately alert their students and staff of the danger as it was unfolding.

“A shooting has been reported in the electrical engineering building,” the school tweeted. “1 person is in custody.”

Two students told the Journal & Courier that they heard what sounded like a pair of gunshots before they spotted someone with possible blood on his or her hands.

School officials lifted the lockdown order after they determined students were no longer in danger.

Police wrapped the electrical engineering building with crime tape as they continued to investigate the scene.
