''' IN SELF-DEFENCE :
HIT FIRST & HIT HARDEST '''
This is where it's at, this moment before engagement when the adrenaline, the fear, reaches its pinnacle and feels like Hell gathering in the cavity of your chest, like a burning fire-ball of negative emotion
that makes you feel like breaking down in a crying, quivering heap of jellied shit.
It rises from your chest to your nasal passages like toxic gas, gnawing away at you, tempting you to crack, daring you to fight, questioning your ability to handle it, telling you to flee, run, hide, to go! go! GO!''.............This is an excerpt from a book : Bouncer.
It's about the fear of a real, physical confrontation. I've had over 300 fights and if I still struggle with the effects of adrenaline, so will you. Some students may be physically equipped to handle a violent confrontation.
But whereas they may spend hours developing power in the Gym, they often ignore the most important factor -Mental Fitness.
In a violent confrontation, the most common reaction is one of terror followed by capitulation.
Self protection is more about ''flight'' than.......''fight''...., but when you have no other option than to fight, it gives you the best chance of coming out on top. This isn't about .....''quick fix''. methods of countering the myriad possible confrontational scenarios.
It's an insight into the mind of the criminal, the thug, the goon, the attacker, how to recognise him and how to make sure your face isn't on the end of his fist
The best method for avoiding trouble, -''the use of color codes''- or ''coding up'' was devised by Jeff Cooper, an American combat-pistol instructor.
The color codes are intended as yardstick by which to assess a rising threat, and if adhered to, makes most violent situations avoidable by nullifying the threat in initial stages.
Code White -also known as ''switched off'' -is where the individual is unaware of his environment, the people in it and their ritual of attack. It is the ''victim state'' which all attackers look for
Code Yellow - ''switched on'' in terms of threat awareness. In this state you have 360 degrees of peripheral vision and are aware of secluded doorways and psychological dangers- such as ''adrenal dump'' -bodyguards call this
''the !WOW! factor'', caused by having no time to anticipate a situation which then escalates unexpectedly fast. It's what can cause you to freeze like a rabbit transfixed by a car's headlight.
Code Orange -threat evaluation, Orange represents the escalation of a
threatening situation in which you retain the ability to recognise and evaluate its deterioration.
Code Red - threat avoidance, in which you're ready to hit and run.
There is a clearly defined ritual within all physical attacks that most of us are not aware of. Most attacks are preceded by stalking and ''dialogue entrapments''.
The category of attack can be anything from gratuitous assault to Rape or Murder, and the stalking ritual will alter accordingly, as will the dialogue
Thankfully, most of us will have no need to of protection against the latter categories.
Assault and mugging, are, however, far-more common. To the initiated, gratuitous assault can be divided into ''professional'' and ''amateur''
-: AMATEUR :-
This brand of mindless violence begins with something as trivial as making eye contact. In the real jungle, staring a gorilla straight in the eye is regarded as a cue for a fight. There are plant of those apes' human counterparts who'd be only too happy to ask who you're staring at:
The cursory glancer - who accidentally catches your eye- or you his. The glance becoming a stare, progressing to a verbal exchange which is the precursor to violence.
The eye-contact challenger - who is looking for trouble. The first person to hold eye contact with him will be his victim. In both cases there then follows a well-defined ritual.
0- Eye contact is made and held.
0- A challenging question such as ''What are you looking at?'' is asked.
0- The question is repeated with added vehemence : ''I said, what are you looking at?''
0- An actual challenge is made- ''D'you want to make something of it?''
0- The next step for the amateur is the single syllable challenge. As a precursor to violence he will often use subliminal ''action triggers'' -words such as ''yeah?'', ''and?'' ''so?'' just before an attack. During the dialogue stage the attacker will also exhibit some very specific body language.
