The entire Milky Way is definitely going to collide with a neighbouring galaxy, NASA scientists say.

But don't worry, Andromeda isn't set to reach the end of its collision course with our galaxy for another four billion years.

"After nearly a century of speculation about the future destiny of Andromeda and our Milky Way, we at last have a clear picture of how events will unfold over the coming billions of years," said Sangmo Tony Sohn of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

The news comes from painstaking measurements from the Hubble space telescope that show Andromeda, also known as M31, is being pulled towards the Milky Way at a speed of 250,000 miles per hour because of gravity between the two galaxies and the invisible dark matter that surrounds them.
