Wall Street mixed on jobless data

WALL Street markets opened with the Dow making a modest incursion into positive territory, after fewer than expected Americans claimed unemployment benefits.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose a little over six points in the first minutes of trade today, after the Labor Department reported unemployment claims dropped to 365,000 last week.

The S&P 500 fell 1.53 points (0.11 per cent) to 1400.78.

The Nasdaq was down slight more, off 7.09 points (0.23 per cent) to 3052.76. The Dow stood at 13,274.70.

The drop in claims was greater than expected and came after a reading of 392,000 the previous week.

But there was little in the way of jubilation after a string of poor data and ahead of tomorrow's crucial publications of official unemployment statistics for April.
