iPhone 5 screen: 4.6-inch Retina Display developed to fight the Galaxy S3?



Apple’s always been resolute on the topic of the iPhone’s screen: they developed the most perfect, optimum-sized display for a phone ever, and everyone else is just plain wrong. Perhaps not any more, if rumours from the far east are to be believed. Will the iPhone 5 have to ramp up its display size to stave off the competition?

According to the Maeil Business Newspaper of South Korea, Apple is now placing orders with various suppliers for components that fit around a 4.6-inch display. Although Apple’s screen manufacturing partners Samsung and LG are keeping quiet, it’s not the first time word on a larger iPhone 5 has surfaced.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is set for launch in either April or May, and that’s likely to have a Super AMOLED screen somewhere around the 4.6 or 4.8-inch mark. It’s going to be a big rival to the iPhone 5 in more ways than one, and may force Apple’s hand in terms of display size for the first time.
