Veron Philander powered South Africa to victory

Philander has been named as man of the match in two of his three Tests

Centurion, December 17: Vernon Philander claimed 10 wickets as South Africa crushed Sri Lanka by an innings and 81 runs, on the 3rd day of the 1st Test match on Saturday.
The proteas scored 411 runs to establish a first-innings lead of 231 runs over Srilanka. de Villers missed his century by a run while Mark Boucher (65) stretched the lead at the end.
The tourists were set reeling on 37-4 after top three failed to make to the double figures and Jayawardene, only batsmen to be not catched-out in the innings, went inches short of the run he needed to reach 10,000 Test runs. Samaraweera (32) put some struggle but the other batsmen could not provide the desperate stand as they suffered the defeat by an innings.
Seam bowler Veron Philander, 26, took 5 wickets in both the innings as he made his fourth five-wicket haul in only his third international Test, for a total of 24 wickets.
Earlier in the first innings Paranavitana, Jayawardene, Samaraweere and Mathews all scored in the 30s as Sri Lanka was bowled out on 180.
Sri Lanka have not won a Test since legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan retired from the five-day game in July 2010. The next test will be played on December 26.
