South Africa's waste powers homes

South Africa’s third largest city Durban now applies a new idea of generating electricity from unwanted waste thrown in landfills. The project is considered to be advantageous in many ways; Besides providing electricity to the household it helps in making landfills less smelly and giving employment to the unemployed.

The 'Gas to Electricity' project works to extract landfill gas from dumpsites-40 to 60 percent methane and converts it into electricity.The landfill can provide a large supply of electricity enough to light up almost 400 homes .
