After the Second World War, the MARSHALL PLAN incorporated provisions for micro-credit to help rebuild Europe's damaged infrastructure.

More recently the idea has become synonymous with the GRAMEEN BANK in Bangladesh. The Bank's founder Muhammad Younas claims it pulls 50% of the city's population out of poverty each year. The system has come into its own with the advent of micro-payments over the internet and text messaging, allowing anyone anywhere to contribute to what they feel is a a good idea.
