*INDIA HAS WORLD'S 14 MOST POLLUTED CITIES* : WHO

NEW DELHI : Only a handful of India's 100 most polluted cities have drawn up plans to combat air pollution despite -

Being asked to do so three years ago, senior government officials said on Wednesday after a  damning report by the World Health Organization.

India is home to the world's 14 most polluted cities, the WHO said, based on the amount of particulate matter under 2.5 micrograms found in every cubic metre of air.

Environment ministry officials said the WHO's findings were embarrassing but not surprising.

''It hurts India's image, hurts the India story, hurts tourism, hurts medical tourism,'' said an official. lamenting that fewer than 30 cities had an action plan ready to fight air pollution.

''India will eventually overcome the problem, but my frustration is with the timeline.''

The ministry could spend about Rs 7 billion {$105 million} this fiscal year to help cities set up air-quality monitoring systems and buy equipment like  water-sprinklers  to settle dust, said the officials, who declined to be identified.

Officials said the environment ministry had asked municipalities to finalise anti-pollution plans quickly.

The ministry has also fixed six-month to two-year deadlines to set up monitoring stations in rural areas, run health impact studies and build air-quality forecasting systems, according to a government document.

Kanpur, a north Indian city of three million people, is the world's most polluted city, yet it only has one system to monitor air quality, whereas at least five are needed, said another environment ministry official. [Reuters].

*GERMANY'S TRADE FEARS GERMINATE*

BERLIN : As Europe's biggest exporter to the United States and with more than one million jobs at stake. Germany is desperate to avoid a European Union trade war with the United States.

In the run-up to a June 1 deadline for US President Donald Trump to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU, Berlin is urging its European partners to show some flexibility and pursue a broad trade deal that benefits both sides.

But that puts Germany at odds with European peers such as France. Paris, the other half of the motor driving European integration, resents Berlin's big trade surplus and wants a tougher EU stance against the US tariffs.

''There is a great danger of slipping into a trade war that way,'' Holger Bingmann, president of Germany's BGA foreign trade association, said.

Mindful of the data from the German-American Chambers of Industry and Commerce that shows more than 1 million  German jobs are directly or indirectly dependent on exports to the United States, he cautioned against  EU threats of counter tariffs.

''That way, the Europeans would only embrace the logic of protectionists,'' he said.

The European Commission has said the EU will set duties on 2.8 billion Euros {$3.36 billion} of U.S. exports, including peanut butter and denim jeans, if its metal exports to the US, worth 6.4 billion euros are subject to tariffs.

Berlin is pushing the idea of an agreement to lower tariffs across a broad spectrum of products, especially in manufacturing.

''We can negotiate......but we should talk about all industrial tariffs.'' said a senior German official.

A French official said there must first be a permanent and unconditional exemption for the EU from the steel and aluminum tariffs, adding:

''That's the prerequisite for any other option.''

Such differences risk driving EU countries apart, weakening their bargaining position with Trump playing into his hands as he tries to make U.S. businesses more competitive globally. [Reuters]

*ROHINGYA' S MYANMAR ROUSINGS*

MUSLIM NATIONS seek global pressure on Myanmar over Rohingya.

DHAKA : Muslin foreign ministers on Sunday launched a campaign to mobilise international support for action against Myanmar over the Rohingya refugee crisis, officials said.

Foreign ministers and diplomats of the 53 member Organisation of Islamic Conference [OIC] set up a campaign committee during two days of talks in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

OIC secretary general Yousef bin Ahmed AI-Othaimeen called the move a key step towards ending the crisis caused by the exodus of about 700,000 Muslim Rohingya from Buddhist-majority Myanmar into camps in Bangladesh.

He said the new committee would ''mobilise and coordinate international political support for accountability for human rights violations against the Rohingya community.''

''This is very important. This is one of the concrete steps that has been taken to alleviate the problem for our [Rohingya] brothers and sisters,'' he said.

A military campaign launched in Myanmar's Rakhine state in August last year set off the massive influx of the Muslim Minority into Bangladesh where they joined 300,000 refugees already living in squalid camps following previous violence.

The United Nations and United States have said the crackdown amounted to ethnic cleansing. The Myanmar army has said it only targeted the militants.

Rohingya civilians have told of murders and rapes as they fled. They said the army burned hundreds of Rohingya villages to the ground.

AI-Othameen said Muslim nations had to ''pressure the international community.''

''This is not religious, this is human basic rights of our brothers and sisters in the last 50 years,'' he said.

The International Criminal Court prosecutor has already called for the tribunal to rule on whether it can investigate the allegations of mass rape and killings. [AFP]

STUDENT SALAR Khan Yusafzai - *The United States and proud Pakistan* - the future astrophysicist to the world, like his very great parents - is one very high class lad.

His outstanding work, to the causes dear to humanity, has earned him great distinctions with a letter of appreciation from - America's very loved president, President Barrack H Obama.

It is a great honor for The World Students Society to nominate him as the Global Head of the *International Page* on Sam Daily Times : *The Voice of the Voiceless*.

The World Students Society, stands up and tall, and gives Student Salar Khan a standing ovation.

A FACEBOOK NOTIFICATION on Gary Bernhardt's phone woke him up one night last November with incredible news :

A message from Mark Zuckerberg himself,, saying that he had won $750,000 in the Facebook lottery.

''I got all excited. Wouldn't you?'' said Mr. Bernhardt, 67, a retired forklift driver and a Army veteran in Ham Lake, Minn. He stayed up until dawn, trading messages with the person on the other end.

To obtain his winnings, he was told, he first needed to send $200 in iTunes gift cards.

Hours later, Mr. Bernhardet bought the gift cards at a gas station and sent the redemption codes to the account that said it was Mr. Zuckerberg. But the requests for money didn't stop.

By January, Mr. Bernhardet had wired an additional $1,130 in cash, or about a third of his Social Security checks over three months.

Mr. Bernhardt eventually realized that he had been the unwitting victim of a scam that has thrived on Facebook and Instagram by using the sites own brands - and its top executives - to lure people in.

At a time when the real Mr. Zuckerberg has vowed to clean up Facebook, the Silicon Valley  company has failed to eliminate impostor accounts masquerading as him and his chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, to swindle Facebook users out of thousands of dollars.

Dear Students - Dear tech workers:

Believe Ya me, students could fix the tech industry. Students could fix anything : Corruption, Criminals and Crooks.

Some tech workers are already starting to flex their muscles. Employees of large tech companies led an effort to oppose the travel ban announced by President Trump last year.

And employees of Facebook, Google. Intel, Cisco and Stripe attended a demonstration at the headquarters of Palantir to protest the company's development of surveillance technology for federal immigration enforcers.

Just so recently, Google's employees signed a letter objecting to the company's involvement in a  Pentagon Program that could use artificial intelligence to improve the accuracy of drone strikes.

But all these are just warm-up skirmishes. For maximum impact, tech workers will need to scrutinize not just their employers's government ties, but their products, business models and basic standards.

And they'll need to do it in public.

Just so recently, more than 3,000 Google employees signed a letter objecting to the company's involvement in a Pentagon Program that could use artificial intelligence to improve the accuracy of drone strikes.

Recall what happened at Uber. Woman inside the company complained for years about the problematic behavior of Travis Kalanick and other company leaders.

But it wasn't until Susan Fowler, a former Uber engineer, published her story of sexual harassment that things changed.

Without Ms. Fowler's brave disclosure - and her colleagues willingness to back her up after she went public - it's entirely possible that Mr. Kalanick would still be Uber's chief executive and the company would still be run by boorish bros.

Typically, when workers speak out or organize, it's because they want higher wages, better working conditions or stronger job security.

Those aren't your problems.

You probably work manageable hours in tastefully decorated buildings with free food, ergonomic desk furniture and plentiful amenities.

Your compensation is generous. And you're in little danger of being fired or retaliated against, especially of you're a part of a large group.

The possibilities for you are so much greater.

*What if Facebook employees publicly took their executives to task for neglecting the real world  violence their products are causing in places like Myanmar and Sri Lanka?*

*TUTANKHAMUN'S HIDDEN CHAMBERS?*

CAIRO : *Theory debunked*. Tests show no hidden Tutankhamun chambers.

Egypt's antiquities ministry said on Saturday that tests had debunked a theory that there are hidden chambers next to the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings.

Experts used ground penetrating radar [GPR] which provided ''conclusive evidence of the non-existence of hidden chambers adjacent to or inside Tutankhamun's tomb,'' the ministry said in a statement.

Italian scientific team, Scientist  Francesco Porcelli, of the Polytechnic University in Turin, had submitted a report that  ''concluded, with a very high degree of confidence .........the hypothesis concerning the existence of hidden chambers or corridors adjacent to Tutankhamun tomb is not supported by GPR data.

''Previous scans had suggested the possibility of hidden chambers, although experts disagreed on the results.

British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves had theorised that the tomb was in fact that of Nefertiti, the wife of Tutankhamun father, King Akhenaten.

The theory held that when the boy king died unexpectedly at a young age, he was rushed into the outer chamber of the tomb in southern Egypt.

Akhenaten was known for trying and failing to force Egypt to convert to Monotheism.

DNA evidence has shown that Akhenaten was Tutankhamun's father, but Egyptologists do not agree on the identity of his mother. [AFP]
