CYBERCRIME -1 TRILLION COSTS- *CRAMPING : RESEARCHERS

Washington : Cybercrime costs to top $1 trillion this year : Cyber crime is expected to cost the global economy more than $ 1 trillion this year, up more than 50 percent since 2018, a research report said on Monday.

The report by McAfee Corp, in cooperation with the Center for Strategic and International Studies [CSIS], concluded that the cost of online criminal activity was more than one percent of the global economic output, and also had significant non-monetary impacts.

The researchers noted a surge in a number of attacks including ransomware, phishing, business email takeovers, spyware and cryptocurrency theft.

Some of the increase can be attributed to weaker security with more people working remotely outside their workplace.

''The severity and frequency of cyber attacks on businesses continues to rise as technologies evolve, new technologies broaden the threat surface, and the nature of work expands into home and remote environments,'' said Steve Grobman, chief technical officer at McAfee.

''While governments and industry are aware of the financial and national security implications of cyber attacks, unplanned downtime, the cost of investigation breaches and disruption by productivity represent less appreciated high impact costs.''

The report was based on a survey of 1,500 technology professionals in government and business in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and Australia.

The impact of cybercrime included the loss of intellectual property and monetary assets, but also system downtime and damage to an organization's. reputation, according to the reports.

''It's no secret that cybercrime can harm public safety, undermine national security, and damage economies,'' the researchers wrote. [AFP]

PHONE CAMERA PLEASE : COVID TEST

NEW YORK : Phone camera may very soon replace LABS in Covid test : Researchers seeking faster, more convenient options for ramping up coronavirus testing are looking at a novel approach using a gene-editing technology called. CRISPR and smartphone cameras in place of bulky laboratory equipment.

In a paper published on Friday in CELL, a tam that includes Jennifer Doudna - this years co-winner of the  Nobel Prize in Chemistry - describes a CRISPR - based Covid test in which the swab sample is mixed with enzyme called Cas13 that can recognise the genetic material of the new coronavirus, plus an extra molecule that becomes fluorescent when cut.

The mixture is then placed in a device that attaches to smart phones. If the mixture contains genetic materials from the virus, the enzyme finds it and slices it - without time-consuming virus-purification steps other tests require. [Reuters]

MARX'S LIEUTENANT MASTS : WORLD HISTORY

IT has become relatively commonplace in the past couple of decades to acknowledge the contemporary relevance of Karl Marx's critique of capitalism.

Towards the very end of his entertaining biography of Friedrich Engels, Tristram Hunt takes a step further, citing the comparison made by a Chinese scholar, Ching Kwan Lee, between the horrific working conditions in an 1840s Manchester cotton mill described by Engels, and the factory experiences of a migrant workers in Shenzen 160 years later.

He then points to the irony ''that such unleavened exploitation is actively sanctioned by the Communist Party of China''.

Engels description comes from The Condition of the Working Class in England, the seminal text he wrote at 24, shortly before he embarked on a bromance that evolved into an unparalleled intellectual double act.

Born 200 years ago into a deeply religious German capitalist family, 'Freddy' was pushed into the family trade at 16, before he had completed his schooling.

A sojourn away from home made it easier to satiate his intellectual thirst, and following a fling with the Young Hegelians in Berlin, he was converted to Communism by Moses Hess, a correspondent for the radical  Rheinische Zeitung, published in Cologne.

The newspaper's editor was Marx, just two years older than Engels. They did not hit it off right away, but Engels contributed thoughtful articles from Manchester, where the family business had a branch.

He managed to get himself posted there because England England was then seen as Europe's most advanced capitalist economy, and therefore the likeliest location for a revolution.

When the two of them encountered each other again in Paris in 1844, they focused themselves in agreement on everything that mattered and just four years later they shared a byline on one of the 19th century's most enduring tracts :

Engels is credited with the first draft, while Marx was responsible for the final shape and form of The Communist Manifesto.

Their collaborations continued for the next 40 years - and, in fact beyond Marx's demise in 1883.

It was Engels who published the second and third volumes of this Marxian magnus opus Das Kapital -he alone was able to decipher his comrade's scribbles. Marx's notes also provided the step ladder for Engels seminal work The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State.

Engels was consistently modest about his contributions to Marxist doctrine. He declared in 1884 : ''All my life I have done what I was cut out for - namely to play second fiddle - and I think I have done quite well in that capacity.

And I have been happy to have had such wonderful first violin as Marx.''

IN THE WORLD : SAY - THE DEVELOPING WORLD, LEADERS so blessed, ought to articulate and implement policy for Special Needs - where the needs of differently abled children are addressed through the universal laws of compassionate care.

Special schools, inclusion in mainstream schools and institutes for learning and rehabilitative care can be established when policies support the initiation and establishment of such programmes.

AND FOUNDER SAHAR KHAN IS A HUMAN OF very great distinction. Over all these many years that I have known her - she excelled in God given qualities of head and heart and academic excellence.

A Degree from Canada, and Masters from Kings College in Global Health issues, and now at LUMS, Sahar's world is all about kindness, service and selflessness.

It is a great honor to both request and nominate her as the Global Head on The World Students Society for children with ''Special Needs''. She will head both the research and applications.

ONE of the biggest impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic has been on the education of children. Months-long school closures resulting from concerns of virus transmission has affected their learning outside the classroom environment.

Almost a year after the pandemic began, the world around them has not returned to normalcy as the second and third waves of the coronavirus contagion have pushed many communities into lockdowns.

Amidst the chaos, children with learning disabilities and special needs have faced greater challenges than their counterparts who do not fall in the same category. Their learning needs have been hampered by the lack of assistive learning technology and home.

Parents and caregivers are often unable to provide special instructions at home, and these children may be reeling from the effects of drastic change in their routines, that are also affecting their emotional well-being.

In addition, the expense of assistive, custom-designed learning material is a major concern along with the technical challenges that parents face as the children need specialised learning instructions and therapy-based interventions that are difficult to provide in home settings.

It is critical for families to be extra caring, loving and supportive toward children with special needs so that they feel confident, loved and secure.so that they feel confident, loved and secure. Adults and peers must be encouraged to communicate frequently with them.

Healthy interactions foster compassion and care - a show of concern that is needed for all people in these times. In the case of children with special needs, such communication is all the more necessary - especially during lockdowns - as it could alleviate anxiety and stress in those who face disrupted routines.

Children who are used to attending special schools must be confined to their homes with no option but to participate in online schooling which is not suited to their learning needs.

ON THE WORLD STUDENTS SOCIETY - MOST LOVINGLY CALLED !WOW! there will always be a sense of greater responsibility attached to parents of children with special needs.

Life will often call upon us and the parents to ''balance the act'', and ensure that the special-needs child and his or her siblings - who maybe self-sufficient in comparison - receive special love and support.

Such groups of parents must receive adequate outside support in order to manage the needs of their family, they must be made to understand the importance of routines and lifestyles that suit the needs of the whole family, while making the necessary adjustments to accommodate the needs of their special -needs child.

BLESSED PARENTS OF ANGELIC CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS require total support and detailed information on techniques to manage their child's routine at home.

Parents should have 100% assurance that their child's doctor, professional caregivers or teacher is available online and can be approached in person should the need arise.

Occasional home visits by professional caregivers and teachers could help both parents and and their special-needs child feel less anxious - Videoconferencing, voice chat, messaging services, etc should also be available.

Health systems must continue to provide services to children with special needs and arrange for special clinics, including mobile clinics to ensure they have access to medical care when required.

Prevention for everyone is key during the pandemic, and students with special needs may need extra attention where following SOP's is concerned in order to ensure that they are protected from the virus.
