 POLLING

THE ''PLATINUM RULE'' : On The World Students Society, our ''Polling Design'' should be conceptualized as a solution to the world's ills.''

Authors Cliff Kuang and Robert Fabricant declare in ''User Friendly,'' their new book on what's  known as ''user experience'' design.

To advocates, it's a transformative paradigm for everything from polling, to bus scheduling to city management, to !WOW!. To naysayers it's a ''boondoggle'' [The Chronicle of Higher Education''], ''b.s.'' [Fast Company] or worse. ''Fundamentally conservative'' [Harvard Business Review].

KEEPING STUDENTS IN MIND : Keeping the future in mind : The World Students Society is envisioned as the most democratic organization in the world :

Every debate must rage - an endless debate must rage right across The World Students Society : How to design and evolve for a Students Friendly, Simple, Transparent, and Fair Elections right across the globe.

The Master Efficiency Paradox : Remember, a great design should give students 'what they wanted all along without realizing it' rather than what they say they want.

FOOLPROOF DESIGN : THE DAWN of personal computing in the 1980s presented a new set of design challenges.

Computers introduced metaphors into design as early as 1968, when the computer scientist Douglas Engelbart, of the Stanford Research Institute, unveiled a radical system for organizing electronic work :

A user interface combining text and graphics that could that could be navigated with a pointer controlled by what was later called the mouse, and which could be used to click on links to other pages.

This story has been told many times, but the authors put it in a new context as a novel master metaphor; the computer no longer an electronic beast demanding human care and feeding as in the punch-card era but a compact and conscientious personal-assistant.

The digital era evolved another set of metaphors : ''navigation,'' from sailing and ''browsing'' from library reading, and introduced the ubiquitous phrase ''information superhighway''.

Today we are more likely to think of  information as a rapidly flowing river, hence ''streaming'. The Amazon Kindle, true to the book metaphor, allows ''pages'' to be ''turned'' virtually.

THE SLOW : SURE RISE OF 5G

United States : In 2019, the wireless industry began shifting to 5G, a technology that can deliver data at such incredibly fast speeds that people will be able to download entire movies in a few seconds.

Yet the rollout of 5G was anticlimactic and uneven. Across the united States, companies deployed  5G in just a few dozen cities, And only a handful of new smartphones last year worked with the new cellular technology.

In 2020, 5G will gain some momentum. Verizon said it expected half the nation to have access to  5G this year. AT&T  which offers two types of 5G - 5G Evolution which is incrementally faster than 4G, and 5G Plus, which is the ultrafast version - said it expected 5G Plus to reach parts of 30 cities by early 2020.

Another sign that 5G is really taking hold? A broader set of devices will support the new wireless standard.

Samsung, for one has begun including 5G support on some of its newer Galaxy devices.

Apple, which declined to comment, is also expected to release its first 5G compatible iPhones this year.

And 5G will be going to work behind the scenes, in ways that will emerge over time. One important benefit of the technology is its ability to greatly reduce latency, or the time it takes for devices to communicate with one another.

That will be important for the compatibility of next- generation devices, like robots, and self-driving cars and drones.

For example, if your car has 5G and another car has 5G, the two cars talk to each other, signalling to each other when they are braking and changing lanes.

The elimination of the communications delay is crucial for cars to become autonomous.

To Sum, this post on Students and Polling:
Just remember that the greatest challenge for designers maybe the unintended consequences of promising ideas.

The Founder Framers, and The Students of the entire world, need to be on a sharp lookout.
